Laminate Flooring was originally created as an affordable alternative to solid wood flooring. It has been popular for decades as a flooring that looked like wood, is durable but costs a lot less.
When it first came on to the market, it was considered to have a ‘fake wood’ appearance. Advances in printing technology are such that laminate flooring is available in a wide range of finishes including wood, stone and other materials, with a wide variety of colours and textures. It can look very real, often difficult to tell apart from the real thing.
Laminate flooring is constructed in thin layers including a top protective layer designed to protect from scratching, fading and every day wear and tear. Next is the image layer consisting of a high resolution image of the material being mimicked (oak / pine / stone etc) with an appropriate texture applied for a realistic feel. Below this is the inner core usually made from a high density moisture resistant fibreboard and finally the backing layer on the bottom which again is moisture resistant.
Choosing laminate flooring may often be a budget driven decision but laminate flooring is an excellent alternative to wood flooring. With such a wide range of design choices, it will be easy to find a floor that suits your tastes and as it’s very durable and easy to maintain. It is very popular in busy homes with kids and pets
